This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the effects dementia has on a person’s communication and strategies for improved communication with a person with dementia. By the end of this course learners will be able to: explain the pathology of dementia and the physical changes that occur in the brain that affect communication; describe why good communication skills are necessary in caring for a person with dementia; describe the changes in communication patterns that occur through the stages of dementia progression; list strategies to effectively facilitate communication with a person with dementia; and identify tips to proactively communicate with family members of the person with dementia.

Course is approved for 1.0 CE/Contact Hour for Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA) in California. Must pass final quiz with 80% or more; may re-take as often as needed.
