Description

The purpose of this course is to familiarize professionals working in long term care with the signs and symptoms that a resident might be at risk of suicide as well as mechanisms for assessing risk and suicide prevention.  By the end of the course, learners will be able to: identify the common mental health issues associated with risk of suicide; define suicide ideation; identify how to assess and recognize suicide risks and when and how to provide staff intervention; identify common methods of suicide and environmental hazards for community-based elders; describe the appropriate follow-up after a suicide attempt or completed suicide; and identify when professional intervention is necessary and which professionals to contact for treatment of a resident who is suicidal. This course is intended to contribute to caregiver and/or staff training.  Participants must pass final quiz with score of 80% or higher; may re-take as often as needed.
