This advanced course on Diabetes Mellitus: Pathophysiology can be taken as Part 1 of a series or on its own.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Provide the general definition of diabetes and explain the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Describe the normal metabolism of carbohydrates and how this is influenced by diabetes.
  • Compare the pathogenesis and incidence of Diabetes Type 1 and Diabetes Type 2.
  • Describe the cause and characteristics of some of the common diabetic crises.
  • Describe the macrovascular and microvascular effects of chronic hyperglycemia.
  • List the generally recommended diabetic management guidelines.

This course is approved for 3.0 CE/Contact Hours for the following professions:

  • Nurses (RN, LVN, LPN) (all states)
    • Critical Care RN (CCRN): meets the criteria for CCRN Synergy Continuing Education Recognition Point(s) (CERPS) in Category A

Course Details

To receive 3.0 contact hours of continuing education credit, learners must pass the final quiz with 80% or more; the final quiz may be re-taken as often as needed.
