DESCRIPTION

This advanced course on diabetes medications can be taken as Part 2 of a series or on its own. Course objectives are:

  • Identify the main goals of diabetic medication management and hyperglycemia management.
  • Describe the various methods of insulin administration, different types of insulin, and the rationale of correction or supplemental insulin.
  • Describe the use of technology in the management of diabetes, including continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pumps, and the bionic pancreas.
  • Identify hypoglycemic protocols for individuals with diabetes.
  • Describe the different types of actions, advantages, and disadvantages for oral diabetic agents used to manage hyperglycemia.
  • Identify the actions, advantages, and disadvantages of non-insulin injectable medications for the management of type 2 diabetes.
  • Identify some of the non-diabetic types of medication for long-term disease management of diabetes.

Course is approved for 1.0 CE/Contact Hour for Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA) in California. Must pass final quiz with 80% or more; may re-take as often as needed.
