DESCRIPTION:
Healthcare professionals dedicate their lives to caring for others, often at the expense of their own well-being. This course equips participants with the knowledge and practical tools to recognize, manage, and recover from stress and burnout in the demanding healthcare environment. Learners will explore the underlying factors that contribute to stress injuries—including the unique characteristics and challenges of healthcare workers, the impact of secondary trauma, and the concept of the “second victim.”

Course Objectives:
- Compare the characteristics that contribute to stress injuries in healthcare workers.
- Identify level of stress on the stress continuum model using color coded zones.
- Recognize how to use the seven C’s of Stress First Aid during stress reactions.
- Describe methods of improving stress, including debriefing and leveraging peer support in the workplace.
Presenter Spotlight
Danielle is from rural Michigan where she started her nursing career in 2015 as a graduate nurse in the Emergency Room. She spent most of her bedside career working in various Emergency Departments across the MyMichigan health system, and has experience in inpatient, ICU, and Shift Supervision. Danielle earned her master’s degree in nursing education in 2021 and is a Certified Emergency Nurse. Since becoming an NPD specialist for MyMichigan Health in 2022, Danielle has focused on emergency, critical care, and trauma education. She is a director with the ENA for TNCC and ENPC certification courses. Danielle has a passion for education and has taught for several colleges and universities in the Mid-Michigan area and enjoys mentoring new nurses. She has a strong interest in improving the wellbeing of nurses, particularly those that are exposed to difficult and stressful situations at work. This interest has led to the development and roll out of Stress First Aid for her health system. She has also developed a unique peer support program titled MyTRUST and has worked to implement a Critical Incident Stress Management team for her hospital system. Danielle still resides in rural Michigan, where she lives on a farm with her husband and three small children.
