This course is pre-approved for nurses and case managers to enhance clinical judgment, diminish stigma, and foster safer, evidence-based practices. Participants will delve into the biopsychosocial aspects of chronic pain, review the latest guidelines for opioid prescribing, and explore alternative strategies that promote long-term functionality and quality of life. Through interactive activities and case scenarios, we will address common myths surrounding chronic pain and opioid use in healthcare environments. Additionally, we will review myth-busting techniques to empower learners to deliver compassionate and informed care.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the effects of opioids on the brain and nervous system and contributing factors related to opioid misuse.
- Identify and debunk some common myths related to chronic pain and opioid management using current research and clinical guidelines.
- Apply a person-centered, biopsychosocial approach to evaluating and managing chronic pain in clinical practice.

Presenter Spotlight
Angie Jung has over 30 years of case management experience in the workers’ compensation industry. She is a board-certified case manager and a certified rehabilitation nurse. As a co-founder of ISYS Solutions, Inc., she has played a pivotal role in delivering medical case management services across California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana. Additionally, Angie co-founded CareerSmart Learning, which provides continuing education to nurses, case managers, claims professionals, and other healthcare practitioners nationwide.
Her expertise extends to facilitating the development of healthcare educational products, including online curricula and in-person workshops. Currently, Angie serves as the president and the director of educational chair of the Case Management Society of America’s Southern California Chapter. She has previously held the position of vice president at the Rehabilitation Nurses Society. Angie is a seasoned public speaker; she has presented at numerous local and national conferences, offering continuing education training for case managers, employers, and workers’ compensation professionals.
Angie is also a strong advocate of giving back to the community. In addition to participating in many local philanthropic activities, she collaborates with her certified therapy dogs, dedicating countless volunteer hours to provide therapeutic support to children and adults with special needs, crime survivors, and older adults.
