This course will provide you with an in depth understanding of the effects dementia has a on a person’s communication and strategies for improved communication with a person with dementia. By the end of this course learners will be able to: 1) explain the pathology of dementia and the physical changes that occur in the brain that affect communication, 2) describe why good communication skills are necessary in caring for the person with dementia, 3) describe the changes in communication patterns that occur through the stages of dementia progression, 4) list strategies to effectively facilitate communication with a person with dementia, and 5) identify tips to proactively communicate with family members of the person with dementia. Learners must pass final quiz with 80% or more; may re-take as often as needed. Course will be updated or discontinued on or before July 31, 2023.
