DESCRIPTION

This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the effects dementia has on a person’s communication and strategies for improved communication with a person with dementia.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the pathology of dementia and the physical changes that occur in the brain that affect communication.
  • Describe why good communication skills are necessary in caring for the person with dementia.
  • Describe the changes in communication patterns that occur through the stages of dementia progression.
  • List strategies to effectively facilitate communication with a person with dementia. li>
  • Identify tips to proactively communicate with family members of the person with dementia.

Continuing Education Credits

This course is approved for 3.0 CE/Contact Hours for the following professions:

  • Nurses (RN, LVN, LPN) (all states)
  • Certified Case Managers (CCM)
  • Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC)
  • Social Workers (NASW)

Course Details

To receive 3.0 contact hours of continuing education credit, learners must pass the final quiz with 80% or more; the final quiz may be re-taken as often as needed.
